Nelson's Dockyard: The Crown Jewel of Antigua

Nelson's Dockyard in English Harbour is not just Antigua's top attraction — it's one of the most historically significant sites in the entire Caribbean. Named after Admiral Horatio Nelson, who was stationed here in the 1780s, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a living museum packed with history, beauty, and Caribbean charm.

A Brief History

The dockyard was built by the British Royal Navy in the 18th century as a strategic base in the Caribbean. It was used to repair and refit warships during a time when the Caribbean was at the centre of global trade and colonial power struggles.

After the Navy left in 1889, the dockyard fell into disrepair. It was restored in the 1950s and is now the only continuously working Georgian dockyard in the world — still used today as a marina for sailing yachts.

What to See & Do

The Museum

The Dockyard Museum inside the old Naval Officer's House tells the story of the dockyard from its construction to the present day. Fascinating artefacts, maps, and exhibits bring the history to life.

The Restored Buildings

Wander through beautifully restored 18th-century buildings including the Copper & Lumber Store, the Sail Loft, and the Admiral's Inn — now a charming hotel and restaurant.

The Marina

The marina is packed with stunning sailing yachts and superyachts from around the world. Stroll the waterfront, grab a drink at one of the bars, and soak in the atmosphere.

Shirley Heights Lookout

A short drive above the dockyard is Shirley Heights, offering the most spectacular views on the island. Come on a Sunday evening for the legendary party with steel bands, BBQ, and dancing.
